LEWISTON – The Lewiston Elks Lodge 371 recently recognized two individuals for their outstanding service and dedication to the lodge and the community. Joseph Travaglini received the Elk of the Year Award, and Cindy Morin was named Citizen of the Year. The two were presented with plaques at the installation of officers by outgoing Exalted Ruler Jackielynn Farrell.

The Elk of the Year Award is presented to a member who provides dedicated service and willingness to work on behalf of the order and the lodge. The member is recognized for involvement in the lodge programs, and must live up to the Elks motto, “Elks Care – Elks Share.” The Citizen of the Year Award recognizes an individual who provides dedicated service to the community.

The Elk of the Year Award was presented to Travaglini who, according to Farrell, has been called upon many times over the previous eight years, and he has always been there to help. He has worked behind the scenes at many mundane tasks, including clean-up at many of the lodge functions. He can always be counted upon to get the job done.

Morin is best known for her hard work and dedication to children. A natural musician and presenter, Morin has given a considerable amount of time to serving nonprofit organizations, including the Elks and the Grange.

She has assisted in distributing free dictionaries to area schools, and has helped raise money and is a strong supporter of the Maine Elks major project, the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.

Morin also works with seniors, and is quick to volunteer her time and talent in any area that is needed. According to Farrell, Morin is always “promoting others areas of strength, and is a tremendous ambassador of good will and public service.”

The Officer of the Year Award was presented to Fred Bernard for his long-term dedication and service to the lodge. Bernard served as exalted ruler of the Rumford Lodge before transferring to Lewiston, and has served the Lewiston Lodge with distinction.

The Lewiston Lodge is one of 22 in the state as part of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. The order sponsors programs that support charities, Americanism, drug awareness, scholarships, youth and veterans.
