As of the year 2007, Monmouth Academy students have adopted a new tradition. With spirits low, two students decided it was time for a change. Plans for this tradition were put into action, and with a slow but steady pace, spirits began to rise. Monmouth Academy seniors, Heather Leonas and Jessica Gray, initiated the proposal just in time for Homecoming 2007, awarding the graduating class 200 dollars and the spirit stick for their winning efforts during the first annual “Spirit Week” competition.

In preparation for Homecoming 2008, our annual “Spirit Week” was held. During these five days of friendly competition among classes, students are asked to support their peers by dressing up in the attire assigned for the day. Mismatch Monday kicked off our week, with freshmen off to a dim start; one point, and seniors taking the lead with 15 points. Tuesday our school supported favorite sports teams, followed by Wednesday, where students were asked to “Embrace [their] Inner Hick.” Overalls and flannel shirts appeared to be the new dress code, and although we all know Monmouth, Maine to be a quaint farming town, it’s hard to imagine that anyone would drive a tractor to school. However, MA senior, Jay Goudreau (pictured), seemed up to the challenge.

With juniors and seniors neck and neck by the end of Wednesday, seniors decided it was time to step up their game. The halls screamed blue on Thursday, “Class Color Day,” when over half of the senior class displayed their support in some form of the color blue.

By the end of the week, what the competition came down to, was supporting our school and getting students excited for the following days, Homecoming events. Friday ended our competition, with a Maroon and White day. Students wore anything and everything in our school colors.

Although Homecoming has been postponed to October 10 and 11,and our pep rally to October 9, MA students will hold on to the spirit they gained, as long as we can keep traditions like this one alive.
