LEWISTON – The Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce has announced its adult scholarship program. Two scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded annually to recognize employees of Chamber members who have shown effort in advancing their education at the college level.

Applicants for the scholarships should: have a high school diploma, adult diploma or GED; be employed 20 or more hours by a business that is a member of the Chamber; be ready to begin post-secondary course(s) within six months of receiving the award; be matriculated in college-level coursework applicable toward a two-year degree or higher; and be at least age 25.

Scholarship applications can be picked up at the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce at 179 Lisbon St. and at area colleges and adult education programs. The application can be downloaded from www.androscoggincounty.com/adultscholarship.pdf. Applications are due at the Chamber office by May 1.

Zark Van Zandt, dean of USM at Lewiston-Auburn College, believes the scholarship program is an important step in increasing degree holders in Androscoggin County.

He said, “The global economy requires that people be lifelong learners. The Chamber scholarships send a twofold message that we are committed to growing the economy of the region through an educated workforce and that adults should never give up on their higher education goals.”

Charles Collins, dean of students at Central Maine Community College, said, “The Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce has always been a leader in fostering and supporting education throughout the region. By making this scholarship available, they are providing a significant opportunity for an individual to earn a college degree.”

Betty Gundersdorf, director of Lewiston Adult Education, said, “Adult education programs are frequently a first step for many people who wish to continue their education. This scholarship is another way to encourage that pursuit.”

Scholarship recipients will be notified by June 1. For additional information, contact Chip Morrison, Chamber executive director, at 783-2249.
