A study shows that if students read twenty minutes after school, they will do better on standardized reading tests. Pretty interesting, huh? Many teachers seek a way to get kids more interested in reading. Well, it’s safe to say they have found one- the Book Cafe. The Book Cafe is an after school club that can be joined at any time. The director Ms. Gisile Cyr says that the kids who regularly get good support in reading will improve their fluency skills. While at the Book Cafe the students are given a snack and the choice of herbal teas or hot chocolate. The kids read for twenty minutes then they discuss what they read. In their discussions they learn about new books that they might want to read. Many eighth grade Language Art teachers have agreed to give extra credit to students for attending. Ms. Cyr said that the thing that surprised her most is that ninety-five percent of the students are boys. A student who regularly attends the Book Cafe, Alex Marr, seventh grade, team seventy- three, said,” It’s fun. I have won things like Maineiacs tickets and a game pen.”
The Book Cafe sounds like a success and it sounds like many kids are having lots of fun. Maybe you’ll go check it out. The Book Cafe is usually open Monday through Friday. Hope to see you there!
