The Hebron Academy Players staged Seussical the Musical the weekend of February 22nd and 23rd in the Androscoggin Theater under the direction of Julie Middleton, assisted by Cindy Reedy. Music was provided by Paul Thibeault and Robin Worthley. This was the sixth year for the all-school winter musical and drew the largest cast and crew ever! Over sixty faculty members and students took part in this colorful production, from basketball, hockey, ski, and dance team members to after-school thespians, artists, teachers, and musicians. You would think it impossible to coordinate all those different schedules, but Miss Midd has become a champ over the years at fitting in a rehearsal whenever there is a free thirty minutes. With a record high of snow days this year we all had to learn to be patient and flexible.
Seussical the Musical combines Doctor Seuss’s characters Horton the Elephant, Gertrude, the one-feathered bird, Mayzie la Bird, the Grinch and the Who’s, along with Seuss’s story lines from fifteen different books, including Horton Hears a Who, Yertle The Turtle, The Places You’ll Go, and The Butter Battle Book, to create a modern story of love, friendship and loyalty.
Seussical follows the theme that the Hebron Players have displayed over the years in our plays and this is the idea of friendship and acceptance. Horton the Elephant repeats his belief, “A person’s a person no matter how small,” throughout the play. Not only does Seussical have the same theme as our previous plays, but it also shares some of the similar values that we embrace at Hebron Academy. This was obvious at the cast party when as many as twenty-five people from every part of the school and cast danced together in one great circle. It was rewarding to see the ideas of friendship and loyalty from the play reflected in our community.
