LEWISTON- The Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program – a state and federal funded program aimed at early detection of breast and cervical cancer – has announced its special no-cost screening on Saturday, Oct. 29, at CMMC Family Practice Residency and Bennett Breast Care Center.
The campaign, which has been running for 10 years and screens an average of 4,200 women a year, aims to lower breast and cervical cancer deaths through early detection; provide breast and cervical cancer screening and follow-up services to Maine women who can’t afford it; and provide education to all Maine women about the importance of regular breast and cervical cancer screenings.
A woman is eligible for the program if she is between 40 and 64; has no insurance or insurance with limited coverage or high deductibles; and her income falls within the program guidelines.
For those women who qualify, the program will pay for annual mammograms, breast exams, Pap tests, pelvic exams (internal exams) and limited diagnostic and follow-up services.
Sharon Jerome, director, Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program, said, “This program has been helping women for 10 years and has been instrumental in the early detection of breast and cervical cancers in many women who otherwise may not have been diagnosed in time. We’re committed to educating women about the importance of early detection and helping those who don’t have the means to be regularly screened.”
Preregistration is required. To make an appointment and to see if they qualify, women can call 1-800-350-5180, and press 1 for further information or TTY 800-438-5514.
