LEWISTON – Katie Lauze, Lewiston Youth Advisory Council chairwoman, was in reverse roles on July 13 as she was surprised with the July Mayoral Citation of Excellence by Lewiston Mayor Lionel C. Guay Jr. and fellow committee member Sarah Peters. Usually, Lauze is on the presenting end of the monthly presentation.

A surprised expression appeared on Lauze’s face as she answered the door at her home at 9:30 a.m. accompanied by her dog, Casey.

Guay presented the citation and said, “Katie, as both vice chair and chair of the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council, you have dedicated countless hours of your time over the last three years in an effort to enhance this community through youth involvement. Your presentation, public speaking, artistic and vocal skills, along with your commitment to give your all’ toward a project’s completion, are a wonderful testament to not only you as a young person but also to what you’ll surely achieve in the future.

“And, once again, just last month, you displayed outstanding enthusiasm and determination by going above and beyond’ when fund-raising for the community electronic message board at the Business to Business Trade Show.”

Mother Elissa Lauze snapped photos and Lauze bestowed hugs on her presenters. Her tenure on the youth council ends on July 19, and Peters and Hossain Naji nominated her for the July citation.

Lauze will head to the University of Maine in Orono in the fall to major in sociology, pursuing a career in public relations, public management, politics, law or health care administration.

Nominations for the August citation are due no later than Aug. 12, and one-page nominations in regard to an achievement or accomplishment deemed as “above and beyond” or “extraordinary” must have occurred within the last two months.

Nominations may be submitted to Guay at 27 Pine St., Lewiston, ME 04240, or via dottie@ci.lewiston.me.us.

Guay and the council will decide on a recipient, and the presentation will be made in mid-August at the youth’s home or summer place of employment. Nominees must reside in Lewiston.
