AUBURN – Edward Little High School had four representatives who attended Girls and Boys State June 19 to 24 at Husson College and Castine respectively.
Amanda Burgess and Hannah Read attended Girls State. Burgess is the daughter of Arthur and Gail Burgess. She had been involved in field hockey, indoor and outdoor track in her three years at EL. She has also been the class secretary for all three years.
Read is the daughter of Kirk Read and Camille Parrish. She has participated in field hockey all three years at ELHS and this past year served as the president of the class of 2006. Both young women were chosen “Miss Dirigo” by their respective towns. This title is given to the young woman in the opinion of her peers is friendly, participates fully and embodies the spirit of Girls State.
Burgess was also chosen as the outstanding girl of her town by the counselors.
Markus Schlotterbeck and Kyle Theriault attended Boys State.
Schlotterbeck is the son of Mark and Wendy Schlotterbeck. He has been a member of the mock trial team all three years and served as co-captain this past year.
He has participated in drama all three years and he co-directed the children’s play this spring. He was in the District II Music festival where he played the oboe. He also won the Longfellow Sonnet-Writing contest.
Theriault is the son of David and Karen Theriault. He has been a member of the soccer, indoor and outdoor track teams all three years. He has also been a member of the Latin Club and the Class of 2006 executive board.
Both young men were elected to public office at Boys State: Schlotterbeck was chosen as senator and Theriault as a member of the House, where he chaired the education committee.
Both young men were selected as the outstanding citizens of their respective towns.
All four young people also were chosen for the National Honor Society this past spring.
