FARMINGTON – Estela Bravo’s documentary film, “Fidel,” portrays how the leader of one of the world’s smallest countries helped shape the destinies of millions of people in their struggles for freedom across Latin America and Africa.
The film will be shown at 7 p.m. Monday, July 25, in Ricker Addition, Room 217, on the campus of the University of Maine at Farmington. The public is invited.
John and Katherine Sytsma, who recently returned from a musical performance tour in Cuba, will present the film, sponsored by the Western Mountains Peace Action Workshop. Voluntary donations will be accepted to fund future films.
The video follows Castro through childhood and student life, imprisonment under Batista, warfare and the development of a socialist society in Cuba. An array of observers from Harry Belafonte and Alice Walker to Nelson Mandela and Ramsey Clark describe events leading to the U.S. Blockade, Cuban participation in third world civil wars and the “Special Period” after the collapse of the Soviet bloc.
