GARDINER – Gardiner Public Library’s next Tuesday Family Night will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, in the Hazzard Reading Room when author Claude Berube will discuss his new book, “A Call to Sea: Captain Charles Stewart of the USS Constitution,” co-authored with John Rodgaard.

Steward has been called the Navy’s real-life “Jack Aubrey,” Patrick O’Brien’s fictional hero.

Born in Philadelphia during the American Revolution, Stewart went to sea as a cabin boy at the age of 13.

He cemented his reputation as commander of the Navy’s most powerful frigate, the USS Constitution. Undefeated in battle, the ship and captain came to be known as “Old Ironsides.” The book will be available.

Berube is a native of Lewiston. He has worked for the Department of the Navy and on Capitol Hill for two Maine senators. He was also an analyst with the director of Naval Intelligence’s Terrorism Red Cell.

Berube and his wife live in Annapolis, Md., where he will be an instructor in American government at the U.S. Naval Academy. Berube is the son of the late Georgette Berube, who served in the Maine House and Senate from Lewiston for 30 years.

The Tuesday Family Night programs are free and open to the public. Call 582-3312 for more information.
