LEEDS – The Leeds Post Office celebrated the art of letter writing recently with second-grade students and teachers from the Leeds Central School in honor of National Letter Writing Month. Leeds Postmaster Loretta Theriault organized the event, which was hosted by teacher Joyce Dionne and 20 students in her class.
Theriault held a variety of fun workshops, which tied into homework assignments given by Dionne. Students were taught about proper addressing on envelopes, the importance of using return addresses, how stamps are designed and made, the history of the USPS and stamp collecting.
In honor of the event, the Leeds and Lewiston post offices donated two mint stamp collector books to the school library. Theriault used the books to demonstrate stamp collecting, showing students how to apply stamps correctly into collector books to preserve their value.
Theriault taught students the importance of behaving safely around mail delivery vehicles, asking children not to play near or run toward carriers as they deliver mail.
“Safety is our most important concern,” said Theriault, “and we need customers to maintain a safe distance from moving mail vehicles as they approach and depart from daily home deliveries.”
