LEWISTON – Clean Sweep, Bates College’s fifth annual sale of furnishings and other goods donated by departing students, will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at the college’s Underhill Arena, 145 Russell St.

For more information about the sale, phone 207-786-6468.

Bates is one of a number of colleges and universities nationwide that benefit both the environment and local nonprofit organizations by selling useful possessions – CDs and DVDs, sports equipment, electronics, household goods and myriad other things – donated by students as they head out at the end of the academic year.

“Clean Sweep’s goals are to make available to the community usable items no longer needed by Bates students, to keep those items out of the waste stream and to support community organizations by providing a fund-raising opportunity,” said Camille Parrish, a learning associate in the college’s environmental studies program and one of the organizers of this year’s event.

Local organizations supply volunteer workers for the sale and, in turn, benefit from a share of the proceeds. Last year’s event raised approximately $13,000 for participating nonprofit groups, including Androscoggin Head Start, the Maine People’s Alliance, the Many and One Coalition, the Lewiston Time Dollar Program, Lots to Gardens and the Maine Center for Justice, Ecology and Democracy.
