RUMFORD – The Rumford Area Quilters have created three wall hanging quilts for the expanded Rumford Hospital Oncology Suite. The largest quilt boasts squares stitched by many quilters. After the squares were assembled the work was quilted by Shirley Gammon, a professional quilter, who donated her efforts because she has had family members with cancer.
Quilters included the name of someone who had cancer in each square, the names hidden from all but the most careful observers.
The quilters got the idea for the quilts when an oncology patient overheard staff discussing artwork for the new Oncology Suite last fall. Quilts were suggested, and the patient offered that she might be able to do something about that.
Although they resolved to make the quilts in November 2004, most squares were not started until after the Christmas holidays.
Kath Crump, one of the quilters who presented the quilts to the Oncology Suite staff, brought her brother, Kelly Donahue, and mother, Sylvia Donahue, to the presentation. They were there to mark the first anniversary of the death of Philip Donahue, their father and husband.
The quilters are an ever-changing group of women and men who gather at the Virgin Memorial Chapel on Linnell Street on the second Monday of each month.
