COLCESTER, Vt. – Erin Kelley, daughter of Cynthia Kelley of Rumford, spent the winter break working with those in need in Immokalee, Fla., through the Saint Michael’s College “extended service” program. Kelley is a sophomore psychology major.
She graduated from Mountain Valley High School.
While in Immokolee, Kelley and nine others from Saint Michael’s College volunteered at the Friendship House, a shelter for the homeless directed by Ed Laudise, a 1986 graduate of Saint Michael’s. Students worked with homeless men, women, children, and migrant farm workers.
They helped to prepare and serve breakfast and dinner.
During the day, the volunteers worked at an ESL school for Haitians or at a school for pregnant teenagers where they tutored in many different areas.
Student volunteers also worked for the local Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization, building affordable homes for those in need.
