Look good

LEWISTON – “Look Good … Feel Better,” the American Cancer Society’s program for assisting women who are faced with appearance changes resulting from cancer treatment, will be offered from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Central Maine Medical Center’s Cynthia A. Rydholm Cancer Treatment Center.

A volunteer from the National Cosmetology Association will teach a small group of women how to apply cosmetics specific to their individual needs. Hair and wig styling will also be discussed. Each participant will be given a complimentary bag of cosmetics made available through the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association Foundation.

Library program

AUBURN – “Hot Topic Electronic Resources: Medical Databases” will be the topic at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday April 14, at Auburn Public Library in the Auburn Mall.

Participants will learn about health and medical research using the best Internet resources and MARVEL, Maine’s virtual library.

The tour guide and APL’s reference librarian, Sally Holt, will also take participants on a quick detour to introduce Novelist, a unique database that helps readers find fiction books based upon plot or genre. All ages are invited.

Literary union

AUBURN – Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin Director Tahlia Hope and long-time volunteer Judy Webber will present “A Day in the Life of an Adult with Low Literacy Skills” at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 14, for the Woman’s Literary Union at the clubhouse, 19 Elm St.

The presentation will feature information about the serious illiteracy problem in Androscoggin County, as well as experiential exercises to give the audience a glimpse of what it is like to struggle with low-level literacy.

Refreshments will be offered. The public is always welcome.

Insurance women

AUBURN – The National Association of Insurance Women-Androscoggin Valley will meet Wednesday, April 13 at the Martindale Country Club, Beech Hill Road.

The meeting will begin with a social hour at 5 p.m. and dinner at 5:45.

The program for the evening will be Past President’s Night.

The National Association of Insurance Women (International) is an association of insurance professionals dedicated to the development of leaders in the insurance industry.

VFW to elect

AUBURN – The Capt Frank W. Hulett VFW Post 1603, 588 Minot Ave., held first nomination of officers on March 16. The final nominations and election will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 13. Anyone wishing to be elected for an office should attend.

Members will also go over the plans for the 85th annual VFW State Convention to be held June 10, 11 and 12 at the Ramada Inn in Lewiston.

The Auburn VFW will host the convention, with Don Linscott as chairman.

Plans are also being made by Post Commander Tom Trottier for a “Welcome Home Party” for the troops sometime in June.

Trottier has just recruited 10 Iraq veterans to join the post. Anyone wishing to become a member may visit the post or contact Arthur Roy, adjutant, at 784-6883 or AJRVFW@juno.com.

Club speaker

LEWISTON – Stevens Life Member Club, Telephone Pioneers, will hold its spring meeting at the Ramada Inn on Wednesday, April 20. Fellowship will begin at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon followed by the business meeting.

Guest speaker will be Pam Averill, Alzheimer specialist from SeniorsPlus. Her talk will center on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia issues for family caregivers.

Round table

BRUNSWICK – The Joshua L. Chamberlain Civil War Round Table will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at the Brunswick Junior High School cafeteria.

Kerck Kelsey of South Freeport will speak on Israel Washburn Jr., the subject of his recent book, “Israel Washburn Jr.: Maine’s Little-Known Giant of the Civil War.” Washburn was one of the seven sons of Israel and Patty Washburn of the Norlands in Livermore, all of whom distinguished themselves in various careers. Kelsey’s program will cover Gov. Washburn’s effort in leading Maine during the first two years of the war.

The meeting is open to the public and is free.
