On February 28, St. Dominic RHS held a blood drive hosted by the Red Cross. It was organized by the Student Senate, National Honors Society, and the Key Club. Students 16 years or older were able to participate. I, having just turned 16, was able to bring in a consent form to donate blood.

Students planning on donating were asked to drink plenty of fluids the day before, of, and after, and also to have a good breakfast that morning. My appointment was for 9a.m. When I went down, I had to read this informational packet that discussed risks and conditions. I was then called into a little cubby area where I had to answer tons of questions about family health history and other topics. My vital signs were checked, as well as my iron level.

I was then transported over to the hospital beds. Once the phlebotomist found a good vein, he sterilized my arm with iodine and then started the donation. Surprisingly, I felt almost nothing except a strange flowing sensation, something you don’t usually realize until it’s flowing out of you. It was over relatively quickly, and I felt fine. I had been nervous for nothing! There were snacks and drinks awaiting me at the recovery table.

The school gave a total of 38 donations, only two under the goal. It was a very fulfilling experience. I encourage everyone who can to donate blood. Up to three lives can be saved from each donation. Look for a blood drive near you!
