LEWISTON – Mark Howard, the Cookbook Guru, is scheduled to speak at a dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 20, for Central Maine Medical Center’s Woman’s Hospital Association. Instead of the usual fall luncheon, the association is hosting a dinner at the Korn-Haus-Keller.

Howard is a native of Topsfield, Mass. He studied music at Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory in Cleveland, Ohio, where his major emphasis was the piano. After college, he continued private piano study with several notable teachers.

He also holds a degree in English literature, has done graduate work in education and has taught in the public school system. Howard is the assistant to the Department of Music at Bates College where he oversees concerts and college events, teaches piano and is well known as an accompanist and chamber music performer.

His lifelong interest has been collecting old books about cooking, etiquette and domestic science as documents of American social history. Howard will present a slide show and discussion about his collection.

The Woman’s Hospital Association, founded in 1888, serves Central Maine Medical Center, its patients and the surrounding community. In June the association presented CMMC President Peter Chalke with a check for $50,000 in support of the Arbor House, Pediatric Services Endowment Fund, School of Nursing Scholarship, Cancer Care Immediate Needs Fund and other programs. The dinner will begin with social time at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 5:30. The menu will include fruit cup; choice of chicken cordon bleu, baked haddock, small prime rib or vegetables primavera served with baked potato, salad and rolls; strawberry parfait for dessert; and coffee, tea or soda. The cost is $16 (tax and tip included).
