BETHEL – The next lecture in the Bethel Historical Society series will feature Robert Spidell, Andover native, residing in San Clemente, Calif. He will speak on his native town, which this year observed the bicentenary of its incorporation.
The lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 at the Dr. Moses Mason House meeting room. Spidell has spent years studying the history of Andover, and last year edited and published a book on Pynelis.

Columnist to speak
WEST PARIS – Sun Journal feature writer Kalle Oakes will speak at the 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, meeting of the Finnish American Heritage Society, Maple Street. Oakes will talk about his work and of Finnish ancestry. A coffee social will follow with fellowship. Everyone is welcome.
Society meeting
PARIS – The Paris Cape Historical Society will meet on Thursday, Oct. 21, at the museum on High Street, South Paris.
There will be a short business meeting after which a program will be presented by John Titus, who will tell the history of the Andrews Hotel, going back to the Civil War with David Andrews III, who served during that war. His son, Abiezer, built the first hotel.
The first David Andrews came to Paris in 1784 and lived in the Forbes District where he is buried. Abiezer is buried in the Hill Side Cemetery. The family had a stage coach that they ran from Paris to Rumford in the 1900s. The hotel was torn down to make room for the Market Square Health Care Center.
Club outing
PARIS – The Swingin’ Bears Square Dance Club in South Paris is supporting a beginner’s square dance party for anyone who wishes to try square dancing and have an outing, too.
The party will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at the Boothbay Regional YMCA. Bill Fulton will be the caller. Anyone interested in joining a caravan to the dance or needing directions may call Sue Corning, club president, at 743-7176.
