The Snow Spider

Author:
Jenny Nimmo • Genre: Fantasy • Rating: Seven

Gwynn lives an ordinary life on a farm, doing chores, going to school, and visiting his, slightly eccentric grandmother. When his grandmother tells him that his ancestors were magicians, and that he is one, too, everything drastically changes.

Firstly, a silver spider appears and befriends him. Secondly, he does perform some minor magic. Thirdly, he meets his sister. She had been lost on a mountain, and presumed dead, but she tells Gwynn what really happens.

Using his own skills and his new-found ones, he must make his friend trust him, earn his father’s respect, and thwart the evil spirit he has released.

I was surprised at this book after I read it, I’ve read Jenny Nimmo’s Charlie Bone series, and I expected this to be the same. But the reading level was much lower, and I finished it very quickly. I also didn’t like the plot, or some of the characters. Those are the main reasons on why I gave it such a low rating.

So, if you know someone who’s about seven or eight, The Snow Spider would be a great read for them.
