POLAND – Students from North Yarmouth Academy spent their Earth Day helping Special Olympics Maine. Nearly 50 students spent the day at Camp Tall Pines, owned and operated by Special Olympics Maine.
The camp, on Route 26, offers free winter and summer camping programs to its athletes. The students from North Yarmouth Academy worked 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to prepare the facility for the summer sessions.
Students raked, swept, painted, built, repaired, cleared branches and set up camp. It has become an annual spring tradition for the students. The camp offers swimming, boating, fishing, basketball and bocce, arts and crafts, hiking and relaxation.
Special Olympics is a year-round athletic training and competition program for persons with mental retardation of all ages. In Maine, there are nearly 3,000 athletes involved in the program. For more information, call Lisa Bird at 233-6542.
