MECHANIC FALLS – Mechanic Falls-Poland Adult Education will offer the following spring classes:
Personal Essay/Creative Nonfiction Workshop: The text is Phillip Lopate’s “The Art of the Personal Essay,” a collection of historical and contemporary personal essays. Participants will be expected to write short responses to each assigned essay and, over eight weeks, will write two personal essays. Workshop leader Mary McNulty has taught at the college level, has participated in many writing workshops and is a published, prize-winning author. Thursdays, April 8 to May 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Routine Car Maintenance for Dummies: Carol Testagrose will introduce the basics of auto maintenance. An auto mechanic in the family taught Testagrose, when she was a youngster, about auto repair. She later took a 75-hour auto mechanics class. Mondays, April 5 and 12, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Picture Matting: Learn five or so basic matting designs. Instructor Deborah Housley is the owner of Around the Image.Wednesday, April 7, 14, 28, May 5 and 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. There is a lab fee.
Ballroom Dancing: Learn the basics of dancing with a partner. Specify when registering if a leader or a follower. Couples and singles are welcome. Maine Ballroom Dance will provides professionally trained dance instructors. Dancers will receive coupons for other dance events. Tuesdays, April 13, 27, May 4, 11 and 18 and 25, from 7 to 8 p.m.
First Aid: The American Red Cross course is designed to teach the basics of first aid. Wayne Cotterly will use videotaped demonstrations and actual skill work in recognizing and responding to emergencies, bleeding control, splinting and sudden illness. Those who complete the course will receive an American Red Cross First Aid Basics card. Cotterly is an instructor for the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross. Thursday, April 15, from 6 to 10 p.m.
May Day – the Forgotten Holiday: Learn about May Day celebrations and create a May basket to keep or give. Instructor Barbara Freeley is an adult education instructor who enjoys crafting. Wednesday, April 28, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
