LEWISTON – The Rev. Thomas F. Farley will be the speaker at the Lenten lecture and luncheon series on Wednesday, March 24, at St. Joseph’s Church parish hall.

Farley will speak on the significance of the cross in history, theology, art and culture and its significance to New England and, in particular, Maine, after the noon Mass.

Farley received his bachelor of arts degree from St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, Mass. He earned a master’s degree in divinity from Blessed John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Mass. Farley was ordained in 2002 and is pastor of St. Patrick’s Parish.

Radio fair

LEWISTON – The Androscoggin Amateur Radio Club will hold its annual Ham Radio Fair on Saturday, March 27, at the Ramada Inn.

The club will host the Maine State Convention of the American Radio Relay League, a national amateur radio fraternity.

Event will include an electronics flea market with new and used equipment and accessories. All types of hobby electronics can be found, including ham and CB radios, short-wave receivers, scanners and computer equipment.

The radio club will offer speakers on radio-related topics throughout the day. Some have volunteered to offer their seminar at 7 p.m. Friday.

The fair will run from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. There will be a $5 admission for the flea market. All seminars are free. The FCC licensing exam will be offered as well. Exam registration will begin at 10 a.m.

Distribution day

AUBURN – Auburn AC Serve will hold Distribution Day from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 27, at the Auburn Advent Christian Church, Whitney Street entrance. Registration for April will also be taken. New and former participants are welcome. Call Janet at 784-2164 for details.

Lenten service

AUBURN – The Court Street Baptist Church invites the public to the second Lenten noon service on Tuesday, March 30. Guest pastor will be the Rev. Sandy Williams of the First Baptist Church, Freeport. Service organist will be Charles Marshall Jr. Each service will feature a sermonette, prayer and special music. A homestyle meal will be served in the vestry following the service. Tutor training

LEWISTON – Literacy Volunteers will offer 17-hour basic tutor training workshop from 6 to 9 p.m. for five nights, March 31, April 1, 7, 8 and 12. A two-hour follow-up date will be announced. Preregistration is required. Call 753-1772 for details.

Tot screening

GREENE – Kindergarten screening for Greene Central School will be held on Thursday and Friday, May 6 and 7. If a child turns 5 on or before Oct. 15, contact the school at 946-5681 if not preregistered.

The following documents are required at the time of registration: The child’s official birth certificate (with state seal); immunization records; and a copy of the divorce decree (if applicable).

Hoof clinic

TOPSHAM – Flying Changes Center for Therapeutic Riding will host a barefoot hoof trim clinic on Saturday, April 3.

Clinicians Ray Shammas of Rhode Island and Lisa Walker of Vermont will teach the fundamentals of barefoot trimming. Lecture, demo and supervised practice time will be included. Laselll Jareztki of Maine and Abby Aiyagari of Rhode Island will assist the clinicians.

The purpose of the workshop is to help horse owners learn to perform a balanced barefoot trim themselves through knowledge of hoof form and appropriate trim techniques.

The fee of $100 a person will benefit Flying Changes and will include lunch. Participants may bring their own horses with prior arrangement only. Participant slots are limited. Audit fee for the half day lecture is $50.

Banquet, auction

WOOLWICH – Merry Meeting Bay Trout Unlimited’s annual banquet and auction will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 3, to raise funds for the “Casting to the Future” youth program.

There will be fishing and non-fishing items for the public to bid on at the Taste of Maine Restaurant, Route 1. Special guest will be Audrey Nichols, Maine’s world class quilter.

Trout Unlimited is a nonprofit organization covering Freeport, Bath, Brunswick, Boothbay, Harpswell, Newcastle, Damariscotta and inland to Lewiston and Auburn.

Registration

MONMOUTH – Registration and screening for Monmouth children entering kindergarten this fall will be held from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, April 5 and 6, at the Henry L. Cottrell School.

Children must be 5 on or before Oct. 15. A copy of the child’s original birth certificate, Social Security card and health record, including immunization dates, will be needed. The child will be checked for height, weight, vision and hearing as well as a brief screening with a Cottrell staff member. Bring only the child who will be registering.
