April events will celebrate One Book, One Community in Lewiston-Auburn.
AUBURN – For the second year running, the Auburn Public Library and the Lewiston Public Library will join forces to celebrate reading with their One Book, One Community initiative.
One Book, One Community is an L-A reading and discussion program that encourages all residents to read the same book at the same time to create a community-wide book club. This year’s title is “Snow Falling on Cedars” by David Guterson.
The book is about post-World War II life on San Piedro Island in Puget Sound off the coast of Washington. The story has something for everybody: an apparent murder and trial, a charmed love affair and a community haunted by the memory of what happened to its Japanese-American residents during World War II.
When the title was first published in 1995 it won the American Booksellers Association Book of the Year Award.
All community members are invited to join for book discussions and special events during April. One Book, One Community highlights will include an April 5 program titled, “Discover the Japan America Society of Maine,” an April 15 presentation by Bates College History Professor Atsuko Hirai on “The Japanese-American Relocation Experience During World War II,” and a program on April 22 looking at the legal issues surrounding the murder trial in the book featuring local attorneys Jennifer Ferguson and Craig Turner.
Other events include an April 1 showing of the feature film created from the book (to be held at the Great Falls Performing Arts Center in Auburn) and several small group book discussion opportunities. All programs are free and open to the public.
“Snow Falling on Cedars” is available for loan at both libraries and may be reserved by calling either library. Copies are available for purchase at a 20 percent discount at the Book Burrow in Auburn and Mr. Paperback in Lewiston.
