Walking into the class C state field hockey championships at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Saturday, November 4, the Saints were hopeful. It would be the perfect ending to an amazing season to win States. Unfortunately, no team is perfect and that did not happen. They played their hardest, but Central High School did too, really stepping it up in the second half and causing the Saints to lose 2-1.

Losing seven starting seniors last year, the Saints weren’t expected to have an outstanding season. Boy, did they prove everyone wrong. Up until Saturday, the Saints were undefeated, winning 17 games! The Saints’ defense this year was rock solid. There is no way to dispute that. Only six goals were scored on the Saints for the entire season. Junior Annie Butts, senior Chelsea Fournier, junior captain Katie Landry, senior captain Chelsea St. Onge-May, and sophomore goalie Austyn Carolin make up that amazing defense. The offense was great, too. For many of the offensive players, it was their first year on varsity field hockey, and they proved themselves worthy. Sophomore Mary Lewis was a standout, scoring 14 goals this season and undoubtedly was a very valuable member to the team.

The team spirit shown throughout the year was unbeatable. Everyone on the team really bonded this year and had an incredible drive to work hard and win.

On Wednesday, November 8, St. Dom’s held an assembly to celebrate the team’s season. Plaques for Western Maine Class C champions and Maine Class C runners-up were presented to the principal. St. Dom’s “championship bell” was rung by all of the members of the team and by Coach Brian Kay. Coach Kay predicts that they will take it all next year. He says that the girls will just have to work a little bit harder, but that they can do it. All of us at St. Dom’s have to agree. We love our Saints!
