Officer Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) has been selected to infiltrate a well-known mob society and bring evidence against it back to the state police. Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), who has been hardened by his youth in the mob syndicate, seeks the refuge of the police and works as a double agent. Both are interested in rising to positions of greater power within their realm of activity. However, they are also leaning precariously on the verge of being found out. When the chief mobster, played by Jack Nicholson, and the police discover that there is a mole, both Billy and Colin rush to reveal the other’s identity before their own time runs out.
