GREENE – Abenaki District Executive for the Pine Tree Council, Boy Scouts, Matt Mower announces there will be a sign-up night to join Cub Scouts at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, at Greene Central School.

Boys and their parents will get a taste of Cub Scouting and will be informed on how to get involved.

Look good

LEWISTON – A Look Good … Feel Better American Cancer Society program for assisting women who are faced with appearance changes resulting from cancer treatment will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Central Maine Medical Center’s Cynthia A. Rydholm Cancer Treatment Center.

A volunteer from the National Cosmetology Association will teach a small group how to apply cosmetics specific to their individual needs. Hair and wig styling will also be discussed. Wigs are available through purchase or loan. Each participant will be given a complimentary bag of cosmetics made available through the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association Foundation.

Kulow to speak

NEW GLOUCESTER – Rosemary Kulow, New Gloucester’s new town manager, will be the speaker at the New Gloucester Historical Society’s first meeting of the New Year at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse, 389 Intervale Rd.

Use the side door of the building. Kulow will speak following a short business meeting and refreshments arranged by Avis Ford. All are welcome.

LEWISTON – Post 22, American Legion, will hold its monthly membership meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 in the Trinity Episcopal Church hall, 247 Bates St.

The annual memorial service commemorating civil activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be conducted. Post 22 member Samuel Hall Sr. will read a special message for the occasion prepared by Post 22 adjutant Jerry DerBoghosian

The agenda is as follows: membership and finance update; building chairman Joseph Paradis will give an update on plans for procuring a post home; changes in Post 22 bylaws, discussion needed; final notice for 2004 year membership dues.

Civil War talk

BRUNSWICK – Bill Green, WCSH-TV reporter, will speak before the Joshua Chamberlain Civil War Round Table at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Brunswick Junior High School, Columbia Avenue.

Green is a Civil War buff. He will speak on the governor’s election crisis in 1879-1880 in which Joshua Chamberlain, as major general of the First Division of the Maine Militia, had a pivotal part. The public is invited.

Nurses to meet

LEWISTON – The annual meeting of the Central Maine General Hospital-Central Maine Medical Center School of Nursing Alumni Association will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at the facility.

All nurses are invited. The meeting will begin with a guided tour of CMMC’s Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute by Susan Horton, executive director of cardiac administration. The tour will be followed by a business meeting with election of officers.

Nurses should meet in the lobby on the ground floor of the new Young Wing. The entrance is on High Street next to the Family Practice building at 76 High. For further information call 783-4322.

AUBURN – The annual installation of officers of Tranquil Lodge will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Masonic Hall, Turner Street.

Ricky LaChapelle will install David Gilchrist as master along with the other elected and appointed officers. There will be refreshments served in the dining hall after the installation. All Master Masons are invited.

Birding trip

LEWISTON – The Stanton Bird Club will ring in the new year with a field trip to Back Cove and Cape Elizabeth from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17. Winter ducks, geese, grebes and gannets these coastal waters.

Participants should meet at 8 a.m. in front of Staples at the Promenade Mall, Lisbon Street. Departure time is 8:05. The free trip is open to everyone. Those attending should dress warmly and pack a lunch. For more information, contact trip leader Dan Marquis at 784-8397.

Workshop set

RAYMOND – There will be a workshop meeting of the Raymond-Casco Historical Society at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the Raymond Town Office. New members and guests are welcome.
