LEWISTON – Members of area veterans’ organizations gathered at Veterans Memorial Park to conduct memorial services for the 20th anniversary of the terrorist bombing in Beirut, Lebanon, on Oct. 23, 1983.

The U.S. Marine Corps barracks, where 241 Marine, Navy and Army personnel lost their lives, was bombed on that day.

Veterans also observed the third anniversary of the terrorist bombing of the USS Cole where 17 crew members lost their lives in Aden, Yemen.

The program opened with a salute to the colors and singing of the “Star-Spangled Banner” by the assembly.

Jerry DerBoghosian, USS Canberra Association, offered the invocation, and Richard Giem, commander, Post 22, American Legion, presented a recitation. A proclamation was read by DerBoghosian.

The assembly sang “God Bless America” followed by “Taps.”
