Two get state association recognition for their achievements.
LEWISTON – Betty Gundersdorf and Anne Kemper of Lewiston Adult Education received special recognition for their achievements in the field of adult education in the state at the Maine Adult Education Association’s fall conference on Oct. 24 at the Sheraton in South Portland.
Gundersdorf received the Gerald N. Levasseur Award for Distinguished Service in the field of adult education. She has been assistant director at Lewiston Adult Education for 18 years, following two years as an ABE counselor.
During that time she has been a collaborator, bringing people and institutions together. Some of her collaborative efforts include the Workplace Learning Partnership Project, Moms Plus, the Lewiston Auburn Community Education Coalition, Project Pioneer and Even Start.
Gundersdorf is a proponent of education in the workplace, cooperating with companies and organizations such as Falcon Shoe, Bates College and Central Maine Medical Center to organize and provide onsite learning. She has also exercised statewide leadership, most recently heading up the workplace education objective of the Maine Adult Education Action Agenda.
Niemiec, Lewiston Adult Education director, said of Gundersdorf, “She makes things work and work well, making the most of sometimes limited resources. Her high standards, her verbal and written communication skills, and her energy have contributed greatly to the integrity and goodness of the organization that is Lewiston Adult Education.”
Kemper received Adult Education Distinguished Service honors. She has been with Lewiston Adult Education since 1982 beginning as an ABE teacher and in 1986 becoming the Adult Learning Center counselor/coordinator.
In that capacity she has developed new initiatives for English for Speakers of Other Languages students and for those students seeking completion of their high school education through the GED program.
Kemper has been a leader in Maine adult education, serving as president of the Maine Adult Education Association and as chairwoman of the Communications Committee. She serves on the board of directors of Head Start and Child Care and of Daryleeka.
