LEWISTON – Area veterans and the public are invited to attend a memorial service on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist bombing of the U.S. Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. The service will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Veterans Memorial Park.

The Oct 23, 1983, attack resulted in the deaths of 241 U.S. Marines, including U.S. Navy personnel and U.S. Army personnel.

It is also the third anniversary of the terrorist bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen, Aden. That attack on Oct. 12, 2000, resulted in the death of 17 crewmembers.

The program will open with a salute to the colors, singing of the “Star Spangled Banner” by the assembly and invocation by the Rev. Donald Miller, commander, retired, U.S. Navy Chaplains Corps.

Roland Cyr, Central Maine Marine Corps League, will give an address, followed by a proclamation for the occasion by Jerry DerBoghosian, president emeritus, USS Canberra Association. “Taps” and “God Bless America” by the assembly will close the ceremony.
