BETHEL – Author, Fulbright Scholar and college professor Christine L. Compston visited Gould Academy on Oct. 6 to discuss Earl Warren’s tenure as chief justice of the Supreme Court and lecture on constitutional issues in teacher Dr. Bradford Clarke’s advanced placement government class.

Compston, a former history teacher at Gould, visited campus on the 50th anniversary of the appointment of Chief Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren to discuss, among other topics, Warren’s legacy as it relates to the Constitution and the Supreme Court. The Oxford University Press published Compston’s book about Chief Justice Warren in 2001.

Compston discussed constitutional issues including prayer in schools and the flag salute. Clarke said of the class, “I got a lot out of her visit, as did the kids. Having a college professor who is an expert on the subject teach the class for a day was inspiring for both me and the students.”

Employed as an education consultant in the Young Adult Division of the Oxford University Press, Compston’s career has included teaching positions at Gould, Phillips Exeter Academy, the University of New Hampshire, Clark University, Western Washington University, and University of Massachusetts in Boston. Compston has published three books and dozens of articles and book reviews in professional journals.
