MINOT – Billie Gammon, a storyteller, was the speaker at the Sept. 9 meeting of the Minot Historical Society. She told of the “Three Washburn Sisters” of the Livermore Norlands family.
Gammon chose three society members to take part, Hester Gilpatric to depict Martha Benjamin Washburn, Ruth Gammon to represent Mary Benjamin Washburn and Nancy Conant to be Caroline Ann Washburn. She also chose men to represent the seven Washburn brothers: Israel, Algernon, Elihu, Cadawallader, Charles, Samuel and William. Gammon told of the mother teaching the girls the necessary skills to prepare them to become good wives.
Gammon told of their individual guests to accomplish their goals and the roles the brothers played in helping each girl.
Prior to the program, the regular meeting was held at the West Minot Grange Hall with a potluck supper. The president offered a prayer. The Archives Committee had a display in the Archives Room. Everyone was asked to help with the work on the William Ladd Homestead site.
The Nominating Committee presented the following names for 2003-2004 who were elected: president, Hester Gilpatric; vice president, Eleanor Thayer; secretary, Eda Tripp; and treasurer, Madeline Hicks.
The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Minot Town Office. The speaker will be Douglas Hodgkin and his topic will be “Managing the Poor in Lewiston, Maine, prior to the Civil War.”
