LEWISTON – Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District will sponsor a workshop for owners of forested land from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Walter Armstrong property in Woolwich.
The workshop, “Resource Elements of Forest Management,” will focus on wildlife habitat, understanding forest soils and soil surveys, and the relationships between soils, topography and vegetative cover.
Armstrong, a consulting forester, manages his property for a wide variety of uses. The event will feature a walking tour of the acreage, with stops along the way to discuss soil types, stream crossings, wildlife management areas, natural regeneration of cleared land, commercial stands and planning for a harvest.
Dave Wilkinson, Natural Resource Conservation Service soil scientist, and Paul Larrivee and Kevin Doran, Maine Forest Service, will assist. Reference material will be provided as handouts.
Preregistration is required and cost is $10. To register or to receive more information, call the district office at 753-9400, ext. 400, by Sept. 8. The office is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
