NORWAY – Stone-Smart American Legion Unit 82 recently announced winners of the auxliary scholarship awards. Nicole Dunham and Nicolette Spear were given the unit awards and Shelby Stevens received the Myra Stevens Award.

Joyce Clifford presented Ruth Jucius with a 50-year membership certificate. Jucius has been active in the auxiliary, is past Department of Maine president, Eastern Division Nation vice president and was assistant director of Girls State for 31 years. Over the years she has filled many offices of unit, county and department. She is still active in the auxiliary and is the senior past department president. She lives in Turner with her husband, Charles.

Rosemarie Leonard was welcomed as a new member.

Marjy Sessions noted that she is working on membership for delegates to take to convention for the membership march.

The following donations and expenses were voted: travel money for Girl Staters, Togus for care and sharing, Pine Tree News, Norway Firemen’s Auxiliary, Beals House, Mellissa Sessions for her trip to England and Ireland as a junior ambassador with People to People, USO, Maine Blind Camp annual donation, expense money for delegates to the department convention.

Twenth-three members volunteered to cook for the benefit supper for the Pendexter family.

The unit has recently donated to the Norway Recreation Department 21 pairs of roller blades, five helmets, 13 pairs of ice skates, 21 tennis balls, two skate boards as well as other items, and to the Oxford Fire Department five small bikes, two snowboards, three Tonka trucks, one train set. Also to Fred Burbank for children of need, two golf bags with clubs and tennis racket. All of these items were collected by a member of the American Legion post and given to an auxiliary member who finds where the need is and distributes them.

The meeting was preceded by a meatball sub supper. Rose Moulton and Joyce Clifford co-chaired.

Delegates attending the American Legion convention at Bangor June 20 and 27 were Elaine Rogers, Marion Millett, Lucille Allen and Joyce Clifford. Alternate Joyce Bickford also attended, Ethel Lacourse attended as a non-delegate and Ruth Jucius served on the hospitalty committee.

Awards received were certificates for membership, education program, a pin to Melissa Sessions for community service and certificate of participation in Poppy Program.

Joyce Clifford received a toss-away camera and a journal, two granddaughter certificates for Avery and Eaton Smith, two membership pins for reaching 100 percent for president and membership chairman, plaque for outstanding support and dedication to the work of National Camp for the Blind, certificate of application for Blind Camp by department chairman, Barbara Henley for her history report, certificate for support of Special Olympics, certificate for outstanding support of veterans programs at Togus and throughout the state.
