LEWISTON – My name is Jacob Gaudreau. I am 9 years old, and I’m in the fourth grade. My pets are fish. I have six. I’m the kind of kid who likes to play sports like baseball, basketball and hockey.
The title of the book I recommend is “Bud, Not Buddy” by Christopher Paul Curtis. It is a little bit of an adventure story. The main character is Bud (not Buddy!) Part of this book takes place in a restaurant.
The main character’s biggest problem is that he’s on the run, and he’s looking for his father. He left his foster parents because they were being so mean to him. He was pretty scared because he didn’t have a lot of chances of survival. When he was on the highway he got picked up by a man named Lefty Lewis. At first he thought Lefty was some kind of vampire.
This book is so good because it was scary. It had adventure in it and it had suspense and it was kind of sad too. The most exciting part of this book was when he was on the run. That part of the book made me feel tingly because I thought he was finally going to find his father.
You should read this book too if you like suspense, adventure and something real good to read. It is the best book I’ve ever read so far, but I do not know if it’s going to be my favorite book ever. I give it five * * * * * stars.
Jacob participates in the Hooked on Books parent/child book group at the Lewiston Public Library. Hooked on Books meets once a month on a Saturday. After a brief group discussion, the children and their parents work together on a book-related project. For “Bud, Not Buddy” the children created wooden “Funner Life Rule” (as Bud would say) plaques.
If interested in joining this group, register through the Children’s Room. For more information and meeting dates, call 784-0135, extension 4.
