LEWISTON – Modern what? The name of one of the nation’s largest fraternal benefit societies is confusing to many. But a new program launched by Modern Woodmen of America, which has offices in Lewiston and Auburn, ties to its roots.
Founded in 1883, Modern Woodmen was named in honor of the pioneer woodmen who cleared forests to build homes and secure futures for their families. Today, Modern Woodmen offers financial services and fraternal member benefits to clear away burdens for families throughout the nation.
The Plant A Tree Program helps Modern Woodmen members plant seedlings – an activity the organization said is a way to create a secure future for families, communities and the environment. More than 750,000 members nationwide will be encouraged to order and plant a free tree, provided by Modern Woodmen. With seven varieties available, participants can select a tree that’s appropriate for the climate in which they live.
“This program ties Modern Woodmen members to the roots of our organization in a modern way,” said Dick Courtemanche of Lewiston, district manager. “They can order and plant a free tree to beautify their communities, recognize family milestones or plant it as a family volunteering project.”
Each member can order one tree a year, through the Web site, www.modern-woodmen.org. Members can also take part in locally organized tree-planting events through their local chapters and youth service clubs. Additionally, Modern Woodmen will offer a free tree as part of its ecology awareness program, a free educational program available to schools and youth groups.
Through the tree-planting program, Modern Woodmen aims to plant more than 10,000 trees across the United States in 2004.
