LEWISTON – The following is a sampling of the new books received at the Lewiston Public Library in the last month:

Fict ion

“Best Friends” by Thomas Berger. Roy and Sam have been best friends for more than 20 years until Sam’s sudden heart attack acts as a catalyst to change everything.

“The Da Vinci Code” by Dan Brown. A page-turning thriller that follows a noted French cryptographer and a Harvard symbol expert in search of the solution to puzzling codes found at a murder scene at the Louvre.

“Dead Aim” by Iris Johansen. After discovering a deadly conspiracy, a photojournalist on assignment in Colorado becomes the target of killers.

“Good Faith” by Jane Smiley. Likable Joe Stratford makes an honest living selling real estate in a small East coast town, then con man Marcus Burns rolls into town with a get-rich-quick scheme that ensnares Joe.

“The Guardian” by Nicholas Sparks. In this tale of romantic suspense a recently-widowed young woman is stalked by a deranged sociopath.

“Star of the Sea” by Joseph O’Connor. Intrigue abounds in this historical novel about the 26-day voyage of an old ship, Star of the Sea, sailing from Ireland to New York in 1847 carrying many Irish immigrants who are fleeing their famine-stricken homeland.

“A Visible Darkness” by Jonathon King. Detective Max Freeman is called in to help investigate a series of murders of elderly women in the Fort Lauderdale area and uncovers an elaborate insurance scam.

“The Wreck of the River of Stars” by Michael Flynn. An aging spaceship which delivers cargo throughout the Solar System suffers engine trouble, which spells impending disaster for the ship and its crew.

Nonfiction

“Chicken Soup for the Romantic Soul,” edited by Jack Canfield, et al. A heartwarming addition to the Chicken Soup series.

“Deckscaping” by Barbara Ellis. Ideas on how to make the deck an inviting place to be, including recommended plants and tips on furniture, ornaments and water features.

“Krakatoa” by Simon Winchester. A recounting of the devastating volcanic eruption in 1883 in Indonesia that killed 36,000 people and an analysis of the political consequences that were the result of the calamity.

“Leap of Faith” by Queen Noor. The memoirs of American-born Lisa Halaby who married King Hussein of Jordan in 1978.

“Loving without Spoiling” by Nancy Samalin with Catherine Whitney. A vast array of parenting issues and solutions for toddlers to teens is offered in this book of 100 mini how-to chapters.

“Regarding the Pain of Others” by Susan Sontag. A perceptive look at how visual images of war and suffering impact lives.

“The Retirement Savings Time Bomb and How to Defuse It” by Ed Slott. The author gives advice on how to save retirement money from the taxman.
