FARMINGTON – Guests at a spaghetti supper preceding the Farmington Emblem Club No. 460 April meeting was a squad of Mount Blue cheerleaders called the Mount Blue Cougar Cubs, their families and coaches, Lisa Dube and Amy Harris.
The girls demonstrated cheering skills. They had received a first place in the state youth cheering competition and presented the Farmington Emblem Club with the winning trophy. Local youth cheerleading is sponsored by the Farmington Emblem Club with Shannon Smith serving as chairperson. The group presented Smith with a tape covering their practices and games through the season.
New Emblem President Claudette Merchant called the meeting to order. There were 42 members present. Two women are expected to join the club at the May meeting.
Americanism chairwoman Lois Barker passed out yellow lapel ribbons, made by member Sandy Knight. She said Knight also made yellow bows to be placed at different locations around town. She then read “Freedom Isn’t Free” to the group.
Sylvia Richards, chairwoman for drug awareness, is planning bottle drives for May and October as money raising projects for drug awareness.
Shannon Smith reminded members of the Girls Night Out date of May 13 at the Boiler Room restaurant in Wilton. Secret pals will be revealed that night and names drawn for the coming year.
Beano chairwoman Kamilla Hall is getting new volunteers to work and bake for the Elks Monday night beano games. The new volunteers will start in May.
Connie Small spoke of the upcoming variety show. The club voted to purchase two hand-held microphones and two lapel microphones for the show.
The Emblem Club cookbooks should be finished by June and will be sold as a money- making project.
The club voted to donate $50 for Sue Brown’s walk-a-thon for the March of Dimes and $50 for an Emblem one-mile marker requested by Roger Ryder. A $50 donation was approved for “Jerry” to go to Special Olympics camp summer camp in Orono and $100 for a Cape Cod Hill Student to go to camp Mechewana. A donation of $50 each will go to Courtney Shufelt and Kevin Averill for the Hawaii exchange program for students. A Mount Blue High School boy will be sponsored to Boy’s State by Farmington Emblem Club and a donation of $50 will be given to the Farmington Fire Department and Auxiliary’s Easter egg hunt in Farmington.
Sylvia Richards won the 50-50 raffle and Rebecca Powers the mystery gift.
