NORWAY – Two women were injured Monday night when the van they were riding in was hit head on, spun and was hit again in front of the Second Congregational Church on Main Street.
Margaret Craig, 59, and Rachel Maloon, 85, both of Norway, were taken to nearby Stephens Memorial Hospital for treatment of bumps and bruises, Norway Patrolman Theron Bickford said.
The driver of the van, Doris Craig, 31, of Norway, was not hurt, he said.
Neither was the driver of the car involved: Jeannie M. Duggan-Cummings, 53, of Norway.
The accident occurred at 7:42 p.m., Bickford said, as Craig was headed north on Main Street and slowing to stop at the intersection with Paris Street. Duggan-Cummings was headed south on Main Street and “got distracted when something dropped on the floor,” he said.
Her car crossed into Craig’s lane and hit the van head on, which caused it to spin and take a second hit from the car, Bickford said.
“That’s all it takes is a second,” Duggan-Cummings said of the accident that happened when her open purse spilled its contents over the front floor of the car and she instinctively bent down to pick them up.
The 1999 Dodge Caravan registered to Margaret Craig, and the 2003 Buick LeSabre registered to Duggan-Cummings were demolished.
