PARIS – The winter activities of the Oxford Hills will be the focus of an upcoming episode of “The Maine Show,” a television series that explores destinations in the state.

“The Maine Show” officially launched on Jan. 4, and has aired five episodes. Three other episodes, including the Oxford Hills show, were shot this winter.

“There is kind of a theme of highlighting a place to stay, where you can eat, and an activity you can do in that area,” said Stephanie Koetzle, co-host of the show and project manager at the Waterville-based Ursus Media Group. “We hadn’t highlighted the classic winter Maine sports, such as cross-country skiing and ice fishing.”

The show makes use of its online site with a “proposed itinerary” linking the locations to Google Maps and providing phone numbers and links to the Web sites of places the crew visits. It also uses Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter to promote the episodes.

Koetzle said the show came to the Oxford Hills region after the sales and marketing team of Ursus Media Group, a member of the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce, met with chamber director Steve Wallace.

Wallace said he discussed possible destinations for the group, as well as activities on the chamber’s calendar of events, and checked with local businesses to see which wanted to take part in the show.

“We shouldn’t be some place that folks just drive through,” Wallace said. “This should be part of the Maine experience.”

The crew filmed over two-and-a-half days in February. During that time, they stayed at the King’s Hill Inn in Paris; ate breakfast at Cafe Nomad in Norway; went cross-country skiing at Carter’s Farm in Oxford and Bethel; had dinner at Maurice Restaurant Francais in Paris; and took part in the Norway-Paris Fish and Game ice fishing derby on Lake Pennesseewassee.

“I think people in the Oxford Hills know about this, but we wanted a way to show the state,” Wallace said.

Koetzle said the crew ended up fishing and playing football with members from the Maine band Dead Season while at the derby.

“That just happened on a fluke, but we were like ‘Hey, let’s make it part of the show,'” she said.

Wallace said the show is part of the chamber’s regional marketing identity. He said other aspects include destination guides listing areas to visit in each of the 11 towns included in the chamber’s coverage area and the Oxford Hills Magazine, which comes out once a year.

Koetzle said the show intends to encourage Mainers to explore different parts of the state, but can also act as a resource for out-of-state tourists. She said the Oxford Hills episode will air again in the fall, as well as next winter closer to the time of the activities it promotes.

Koetzle said the show might return to examine a different aspect of the area.

“We are going to be back for the Oxford County Fair, I’m pretty sure,” she said. “The show’s just all about having fun and getting people out.”

The show will be posted online at themaineshow.com on April 24. It will also air on Time Warner Cable at 9 a.m. April 25, 7 p.m. April 26, 11:30 a.m. April 27, and 7:30 p.m. April 29. The show will air on channel 22 in southern Maine, channel 12 in the Bangor area, and channel 9 in central and northern Maine.
