NEWRY – A few new events will garnish a long-standing tropical tradition at Sunday River Ski Resort this weekend.

The 22nd annual Parrot Head Festival runs from Friday to Sunday and coincides with the resort’s Bust N Burn moguls competition, also in its 22nd year. Festival proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

New this year, a Spam-carving contest at 11 a.m. Saturday will let visitors test their skills at turning the meat product into a work of art. Communications coordinator Sarah Devlin said there is no registration fee for the event. Prizes will be awarded.

Also making its debut is a tug of war competition at 1 p.m. Sunday. Teams will be formed at the site, and the contest will take place over a body of water that skiers will use for pond skimming at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The festival begins at 8 p.m. Friday at the White Cap Lodge with live entertainment from the first of several Jimmy Buffett cover bands that will play through the festival.

Saturday’s events at the lodge will include a 2 p.m. margarita mix-off, barbecues, limbo and hula hoop competitions, and a Jimmy Buffett costume party. A key-lime pie eating contest will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Registration for the moguls competition begins at 7 a.m. Saturday. The best skiers will advance to the finals, which start at 10 a.m. Sunday. Prizes will be awarded based on age groups and include skis, backpacks, gloves and goggles. The awards ceremony for the competition will take place immediately after the event at the Parrot Head festival.
