HEBRON – Hebron Station Elementary School children took home dozens of Oxford Fair blue ribbons for entries from their school garden.
“We worked hard on it,” said second-grader Jessica Punch.
“Really hard,” agreed classmate Cameron Cote.
The raised gardens just to the south of the original gardens that classes put in when the building was constructed in 2002 were planted last June by students in all grades. The garden tradition has been in place at the school for nearly two decades, said second-grade teacher Sarah Otterson.
Hebron Station School is one of several elementary schools that have school gardens. Many of the children say they have gardens at home also.
Otterson said she and another teacher selected flowers and vegetables from the garden beds early on the morning of Sept. 6 – the first day of the Oxford Fair – to bring to the fair for showing.
Some children won ribbons for best display of string beans and best display of green tomatoes. Other children in other grades also won fair ribbons for their entrees.
“I like planting pumpkins,” Olivia Swift said.
“My favorite thing is watching the plants grow,” Abby Buck said.
“I like to watch my baby brother grow,” chipped in Victoria LoCicero-Alfano, whose brother Adin Mitchell was born three days ago.
