UPTON – An Upton man remains jailed in Paris after state police say he took three people hostage at gunpoint late Friday night at his Thistle Street home.
None of the hostages were injured, and all had escaped before Charles Lavallee, 38, of 295 Thistle St., surrendered to police following a short standoff, according to investigating Trooper Christopher Cookson.
Police made two phone calls to Lavallee before he gave himself up, Cookson said.
Lavallee is charged with kidnapping, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, and aggravated reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.
The incident began sometime before 10 p.m. Friday at Lavallee’s house, Cookson said. That’s when police received a 911 call for help from one of the escaped hostages.
“It was reported as a hostage situation, but all three victims got out, then we got the suspect out of the house,” Cookson said.
The incident happened as one of the victims was gathering belongings to move out, the trooper said.
“They alleged they were held for five minutes at gunpoint, while he demanded money, but they got out and protected themselves,” Cookson said. “He had a 9 mm handgun and shot it across Route 26 six or seven times, based on shell casings we found. It was a threatening thing to prove the gun was real,” Cookson said.
The three hostages went to the Rumford police station to give statements about the incident, Cookson said. Lavallee was taken to the Oxford County Jail where he is being held on $150,000 worth of property or $50,000 cash bail, according to a jail official Saturday. Lavallee may be arraigned Monday in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.
In addition to Cookson, three troopers and three Oxford County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene.
While the standoff ended without incident, as he was heading to the scene, Trooper Sgt. Donald Shead of West Paris escaped injury when his cruiser struck a moose on Route 26 that left his vehicle with “quite a bit of damage,” Cookson said. One of the deputies responding to the scene had reported to the others that he’d dodged eight moose on a stretch of Route 26 and warned them to be wary.
