PARIS – An elderly Hebron couple were seriously injured when their truck hit another broadside as it spun into their lane on snowy Route 119 Tuesday afternoon.
Paris police Lt. Michael Dailey said Robert and Elsie Bellavance of Station Road were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Robert, 72, was listed in stable condition Tuesday night, and Elsie, 70, was in critical condition, a nursing supervisor said.
The other driver, 32-year-old Albert Smith of Turner, was treated at the scene, Dailey said.
The lieutenant said the accident occurred about 2 p.m. on a curve just before the west end intersection with Halls Pond Road. Smith was headed west toward Paris and Robert Bellavance was driving east when Smith lost control of his truck, he said. The Dodge spun across the centerline and was struck broadside by Bellavance’s smaller truck.
“Smith got hit on the passenger side,” Dailey said. “It looks like the elderly couple were trying to avoid him.”
Both drivers were wearing seat belts, the investigator said, but Elsie Bellavance was not.
Paris fire Chief Brad Frost assisted at the scene, and PACE ambulance took the Bellavances to the hospital.
Bellavance’s 1997 Mazda and Smith’s 1996 Dodge were destroyed.
No charges have been brought, and the accident remains under investigation, Dailey said.
