NEWRY – A dash to the slopes put a Mexico teen behind bars on Tuesday night.
Nickolas L. McGrane, 18, of 36 Roxbury Road, was charged with Class C eluding an officer and misdemeanor charges of criminal speed, driving to endanger, and violation of conditions of release.
According to a report by Oxford County sheriff’s Deputy George Cayer, McGrane accelerated after Cayer tried to stop him for driving 63 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone on Route 2 in Hanover. The chase occurred shortly before midnight.
“At several occasions the suspect was on the opposite side of the roadway traveling at 100 miles per hour,” stated Cayer.
McGrane passed one car on an inside curve at 90 miles per hour, according to Cayer, before proceeding down Sunday River Road at speeds exceeding 70 miles per hour. After pulling into the top parking lot of the Barker Mountain Lodge, McGrane gave himself up.
According to Cayer’s report, McGrane is out on bail for charges of operating under the influence and operating after suspension.
McGrane was initially held without bail at the Oxford County Jail.
He was freed on personal recognizance bail on Thursday after an appearance before Justice Robert E. Crowley in the Oxford County Superior Court.
McGrane may not operate a motor vehicle or possess motor vehicle keys, and is scheduled to appear in court on March 20.
According to court documents, McGrane has worked at the Sunday River Ski Resort for a month.
