PARIS – A Gray man is set to become the third assessor to serve this town before the end of the year.
John Brushwein of Gray, a former assessor for Wilton, Bar Harbor and Mount Desert, will begin serving in the full-time position on Dec. 10. Brushwein will be officially appointed that day by selectmen at their scheduled meeting.
“He was the first choice,” said Town Manager Sharon Jackson.
Jackson said selectmen held two executive sessions to review six applicants. One of the requirements of the job was that the applicant have at least five years’ assessing experience.
According to Jackson, Brushwein has been an assessor since 1984, and worked with Mt. Desert from 1987 until June this year. Jackson said that while Mt. Desert is valued higher than Paris, it has about the same number of tax parcels.
Brushwein will work 40 hours a week and be paid $21 an hour.
Kevin McGillicuddy, the former Paris assessor, resigned in September after a revaluation increased the town’s value by $83 million. McGillicuddy said the revaluation would balance the sales ratio and allow residents to collect full exemptions, but stepped down after several residents complained that the move had increased their property taxes.
Carole Kelley, who was hired as a part-time interim assessor after McGillicuddy’s resignation, left the job at the end of November to spend the winter in Florida.
