NORWAY – Two neighbors attended a public hearing Thursday to discuss a proposed pet crematorium on Thomas Hill Road.

Planning board secretary Shirley Boyce said in a phone interview Friday that the home business may soon have the final go-ahead to cremate small animals.

Boyce said that one of the questions posed at Thursday’s public hearing was whether the crematorium would also have a pet cemetery. Brian and Tara Shepard said that they don’t intend to bury other people’s pets at Tara Shepard’s home, where the proposed crematorium will be. The incinerator will be available to local veterinarians and all remains will be returned to the owner of the pet.

Planning board members scheduled a site walk for 6 p.m. Aug. 10 to view the barn where the Shepards hope to install an incinerator that will accommodate pets up to 175 pounds. If the Shepards’ application is complete, it may receive final approval at the meeting following the site walk at 7 p.m.

In other business, John Bell was granted final approval for a subdivision on Whitman Street. A public hearing was scheduled for the Aug. 10 meeting for another proposed subdivision on Ashton Road after Tony Starbird and Todd Truman were given completed application status on their proposed 16-lot subdivision.
