CASCO – A low-speed police chase that wound through Casco on Friday ended with the arrest of a Yarmouth woman who was driving with a suspended license and had a small amount of methadone in her car, police said.

Andrea Bennett, 23, was charged with failure to stop for a police officer, operating after suspension, operating with suspended registration plates, and possession of scheduled drugs, said Capt. Bill Rhoads of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Rhoads said Bennett was driving a “beat up Cadillac” on Route 302 on the Naples-Casco line about noon when Sgt. Steve Lathrop of the Sheriff’s Office detected on radar that she was driving 54 mph per hour in a 40 mph zone.

Bennett did not stop when Lathrop pulled behind her and turned on his cruiser siren and lights. She led Lathrop on a chase through Casco at speeds ranging from 50 to 65 miles per hour.

Rhoads said at one point, Bennett drove up a hill, the car slowed down, and she slammed on her brakes and put the car in reverse. “Sgt. Lathrop said the car was smoking like crazy,” he said.

She eventually came to a stop on Route 121 near the Otisfield town line and was arrested.

Bennett has three active license suspensions and a small amount of methadone was found in her car. She is out on bail.

Rhoads said Bennett was involved in another police chase in 2003 in Pownal and was arrested.
