PARIS – The Western Maine Knitting Guild donated 30 toys, most of them teddy bears, to the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday so law enforcement officers can give them to children who may be involved in traumatic or upsetting situations.
Members of the guild donated the toys and also knitted outfits for all of them. The Sheriff’s Office plans to put one or two toys in each cruiser, and local police departments will be contacted about the toys in case they also want to have some on hand.
Some of the toys also will be given to the victim-witness advocate at the county district attorney’s office.
The guild regularly donates knitted items such as hats, mittens and sweaters to other causes, including chemotherapy patients and newborn babies at hospitals, but this is the first time it has donated items to county law enforcement, according to Marvis Maynard, the guild’s president.
The guild meets the first Tuesday of every month at the First Congregational Church of South Paris.
