Answer: The stone at the Lewiston side of the Bernard Lown Peace Bridge features an engraved picture of Dr. Bernard Lown.
The inscription reads “This bridge is named in honor of Dr. Bernard Lown, a world-renowned cardiologist and peace activist. Born in Lithuania on June 7, 1921, Dr. Lown and his family emigrated to the United States in 1935 and settled in Lewiston, Maine.
“Dr. Lown graduated from Lewiston High School and the University of Maine with highest honors and received his M.D. from John Hopkins School of Medicine. At the Harvard School of Public Health and Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Dr. Lown pioneered numerous life-saving advances in cardiology, including the direct current defibrillator.
“A life-long peace activist and humanitarian, Dr. Lown founded Physicians for Social Responsibility, SatelLife, and ProCor. He co-founded International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) with Russian physician Dr. Evgueni Chazov. The two doctors received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985 on behalf of IPPNW.”
Underneath the description of Lown’s accomplishments is a quote from Lown that states:
“We must behave as though the destiny of the world depended on each of our own actions. This is the moral imperative of our age.”
The emblems of the city of Lewiston and the city of Auburn are carved on the bottom of the stone, which was dedicated Oct. 17, 2008.
Dear Sun Spots: Once again I turn to Sun Spots. Sun Spots is just awesome. It’s so helpful, and I thank you folks for what you do to help us all.
To all the people who have helped me help the poor of Mother Teresa’s Mission in Haiti, I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart. As of April 22, I can only accept money donations. For the past 30 years, Roy and Laurette Seabeck have worked very hard to send out at least 50 tons of goods per shipping season, and it took its toll on his health. Asking all of you for your prayers to help them both through this very difficult phase in their life. God bless you all. – Orella, No Town.
