NORWAY – Three teens from Paris and Otisfield escaped serious injury when their car crashed off Route 117 near Hillside Cottages late Tuesday, according to police.

The three males were “very lucky,” said Maine State Police Trooper Angela Wills, who responded to the accident shortly after it happened at approximately 10 p.m.

Andrew Robinson, 18, of Otisfield, was driving a 2000 Saab toward Norway on 117 when he lost control of the vehicle, Wills said. She said excessive speed was a cause of the accident, and alcohol may have been a factor. Robinson drove off the road, and “they rolled over, and they struck several large trees.”

Wills said the cars were “in pieces” as a result of the crash. “The underneath of the vehicle was on fire, and the engine block was on fire. The engine block was found quite a distance from the car.”

None of the resulting injuries appeared to be life-threatening, however, she said.

According to a spokeswoman from Stephens Memorial Hospital, Robinson and passenger Kelvin Decato, 18, of Paris, were treated and released Tuesday.

Wills declined to identify the vehicle’s second passenger because he is a minor. She did say he is a 17-year-old from Otisfield.

An accident reconstructionist was called to the scene. Among others assisting were the Norway Police Department, Norway Fire Department, Paris Police Department, PACE Ambulance and Oxford Rescue, Wills said.

Cleanup took “at least three hours, maybe a little more,” she said.

Wills added that she is still investigating the incident, and no charges have been brought against Robinson or his passengers at this time.
